The RATIO-SIM Initiative

The specification, design and verification of modern space systems rely heavily on system modelling and simulation. The ECSS System Modelling and Simulation Technical Memorandum ECSS-E-TM-10-21A describes the use of modelling and simulation in support of the space systems engineering process and defines the different simulators used in the project lifecycle.

The RATIO-SIM Initiative aims at the rationalisation of simulation infrastructures, including the methods, tools and processes being utilised by the European space systems integrators, suppliers and operators. The main goal of this initiative is to achieve a reduction of cost related to the development, utilisation and maintenance of the modelling and simulation facilities and infrastructures across the European Space Sector.

RATIO-SIM will cover both the rationalisation of simulation infrastructure as well as simulation models. However, the specification of the model internal architecture and implementation is out-of-scope. RATIO-SIM will instead focus on the model interfaces, to enable the efficient exchange of simulation models, including exchange between organisations (e.g. between primes, suppliers and agencies) and within organisations (between missions and mission phases).

Goals

Objectives and Output

The main goal of the RATIO-SIM Initiative is to achieve a reduction in the total-cost-of-ownership of simulators, by supporting the efficient reuse of simulation models. In addition, improving the information sharing from the system design to the simulator development is expected to reduce the time-to-market and improve the quality. Finally, RATIO-SIM will provide a forum for experts in the domain of system modelling and simulation, to exchange ideas and experiences.

RATIO-SIM intends to achieve the above goals by means of:

  • Defining reference architectures and interface specifications
  • Providing inputs to formal standardisation efforts e.g. in ECSS
  • Providing any software in support of the proposed standards
  • Developing and maintaining simulator building blocks

Governance

Terms of Reference

The RATIO-SIM objectives and output will be achieved by means of RATIO-SIM activities. The RATIO-SIM Advisory Group will define the overall RATIO-SIM goals and will ensure that any activities performed in the RATIO-SIM Initiative are in line with these goals.

A RATIO-SIM Working Group is a work force mandated by the Advisory Group to work one or more RATIO-SIM activities. Its members are designated by the Advisory Group from any of the RATIO-SIM stakeholders, depending on their field of expertise.

The RATIO-SIM Initiative relies on the voluntary participation of the organisations represented in the Advisory Group and its Working Groups, with no exchange of funds.

In support of RATIO-SIM activities, Industrial Work or Support Actvities may be initiated. These activities are expected to be funded by ESA R&D programmes such as TDE and GSTP and are in line with the THAG Harmonisation Dossier on System Modelling and Simulation Tools.

The RATIO-SIM Terms of Reference are the foundation of the RATIO-SIM Initiative and define the RATIO-SIM organisation, management and governance.

Participation

Joining RATIO-SIM

The Advisory Group and its Working Groups are open to participation by organisations residing in any of the ESA Member States and that are stakeholders in the domain of system modelling and simulation. Participants may belong to the following categories:

  • European and National Space Agencies
  • Large System Integrators (LSI)
  • Small and Medium Enterprises (SME)
  • Institutes and Academia

Participants should support the functioning of the Advisory Group and of its Working Groups and may take part in the corresponding consensus and voting processes.

Participants can also be part of the RATIO-SIM Initiative without having an active role in the Advisory Group or in its Working Groups. As Observer, they will be provided access to any artefacts produced by the RATIO-SIM Initiative and will be informed about the overall status and the progress of ongoing activities.
